We’ve written about phishing before in our Shadowfax blog but, as it’s most definitely the hot topic of the moment, we felt it was worth sharing with you a handy Google tool that anyone can use to test their ability to spot typical ‘bait’ and distinguish what is real or fake within received email communication.
As we all know by now, phishing is the fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details. Typically carried out by email spoofing, it often directs users to enter personal information on a fake website, the look and feel of which are identical to a legitimate site.
Deception is key to phishing success and users are usually lured by cleverly-disguised communications purporting to be from trusted parties such as social web sites, auction sites, banks, online payment processors or IT administrators. Phishing attacks also often exploit weaknesses in current web security so the last line of defence is the user’s ability to spot something phishy.
Happily, as mentioned, Google has created an online quiz facility where you can go an test your knowledge of phishing techniques. It’s a bit of fun but features some valuable lessons - go and try it out at https://phishingquiz.withgoogle.com
