Coronavirus has brought about a big shift in our daily lives. Huge swathes of people have swapped a morning latte, a power suit and a commute to an office to a cup of homemade coffee, a desk in their living room or newly created garden office and casual clothes (or even pyjamas on the very odd occasion...!)

For the most part, this is working well. People are able to log on to their work remotely via VPN and are managing to do their day to day tasks with less interruption and seem to be more productive. BUT what happens when we look ‘below the surface’.

Below the surface we find that employees who wouldn’t normally click phishing bait when they are in the office are doing so more often – because they are sometimes more distracted at home (home schooling anyone?!) and they are more relaxed at home. There is also a lot less in the way of continuing formal training at the moment, so where employees would have regular meetings to remind them about these things, they are no longer happening and, as we have seen all too often, the Cyber Criminals are getting the upper hand. They are using these newly relaxed, out of their usual environment employees to their advantage. Barracuda networks have reported a 66% rise in phishing attacks since April 2020. There is no need to be alarmed about the rise in cyber attacks as with the right level of IT support and managed services these risks can be mitigated greatly and certainly the overall benefits of working from home well outweigh having office costs and expenditure in the long term.
