The importance of Vulnerability Scanning

Whilst it’s imperative to practice good security on infrastructure most companies will do so without testing their work. For instance when implementing edge firewalls or a web application many small businesses will stop once the service is working and assume all is well whilst they may be leaving themselves open to attack.

Internet facing services should be regularly tested to ensure they are next vulnerable to exploitation by a bad actor to gain access to data or a foothold into a wider computer system. This can be achieved by leveraging an external vulnerability scan against the service.

The National Cyber Security Centre state that:

"All modern software contains vulnerabilities; either software defects that require patches to remedy, or configuration issues that require administrative activity to resolve.

For this reason, organisations should have a vulnerability management process which enables them to know what vulnerabilities are present within their IT estate on a regular basis. Executive staff should ideally be as aware of the major vulnerabilities in their IT estate as they are of their financial status.

This guidance helps organisations to:

  • assess and prioritise vulnerabilities
  • identify which patches are most relevant
  • ensure funds and resources can be deployed to best effect"

A comprehensive report of any vulnerabilities found will be prepared, which can be used by IT staff as a guide to fixing any issues before confirming with a second scan to prove there is no more threat. Without testing the good work of your security, there is no way to know whether it's working until it's too late!
